Clarification
Which is not to say all Trip-Hop (and so on) is derivative watered down Hip-Hop. The better musicians don’t even think in terms of that formula in the first place. Portishead went out of their way NOT to be reduced to that equation and Tricky always considered himself a punk first and foremost. Rather, it’s always the second generation of any variation the mucks it up.
