Peace to Thomas White
Replying here since Tumblr is weird like that. But yeah - I actually like a lot of Detroit stuff that I’ve heard. Anthony “Shake” Shakir is probably my favorite. Real Techno, like Jazz, is one of those genres that I really wish I had more time to truly dive into.
It’s also a genre that means so many things to so many people - that’s why I use “Tech-House” to refer to the stuff I linked to - so as not to insult real Techno (or even oldschool House which I don’t love but at least respect) - kind of like Dubstep in that way…when I say I love the stuff I’m not talking about what most people know it as.
I saw Dirtybird DJ a big outdoor party this summer and they were cool - I can’t honestly say I was blown away but I had fun. But I don’t think we’re referring to the same thing: I’ve certainly never heard of that label referred to primarily as Tech-House and Google seems to generally agree.
Check out this mix for a better idea of what I’m aiming at: Four on the floor, mostly mechanical stuff that you’d hear in a douchy restaurant. As for why I don’t like it, everything from the music itself to the cultural-associations…maybe it’s my Hip-Hop background but it just makes me want to put on some Wu-Tang and punch someone. Which incidentally is probably why I can get down with Dirtybird: a lot of Hip-Hop influence there.
New Pangaea double-EP leapfrogs onto my 2012 album list despite Pangaea refusing to call it an album. I’ll have to find a minute to review this one for the Passion.

I think this sums it up better than I can. I stopped caring about rap beef sometime around the time Xzibit went at Jermaine Dupri and sampled “Short People”
